Milford Sound Information & Travel Guide

The rugged inlets of New Zealand’s Fiordland are great tourist assets. Milford Sound the best known is the most magnificent and most frequently visited. Nearly 500,000 people visit Milford Sound each year to drive down the 120 kms from Te Anau to Milford Sound for an awesome treat.

There is limited accommodation at Milford Sound so you need to stay at Te Anau or Queenstown, where you need to book hotel rooms. If you are travelling in to Milford by road ,accommodation in Te Anau would be preferable because it is two hours closer.

Most tourists go to Milford Sound in the summer season. With only one access road, it can get congested especially at scenic points. It is best to have your own rented car so that you can freely explore the scenic road to Milford Sound.

In winter, driving conditions can be very challenging. Freezing temperatures cause the road to ice over or else you encounter snow. Snow chains are a must in winter and can be rented from Te Anau. In winters it is best to be comfortable and secure in coach tours.
