Milford Sound Hotels & Tourism

Milford Sound is a fiord in New Zealand's South Island. Located within Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site, it is a top rated world travel destination.

Milford Sound, named after Milford Haven in Wales is called Piopiotahi in Māori. It is one of the wettest inhabited places on earth. Rainfall can reach 250 mm during a span of 24 hours, creating dozens of temporary waterfalls, apart from permanent falls that cascade down the cliffs.

Milford Sound runs 15 kilometers inland from the Tasman Sea and is surrounded by sheer rock facades rising more than 1,200 meters on both sides. Lush rain forests cling precariously to these cliffs with seals, penguins and dolphins in the waters.

The beauty of the landscape draws countless visitors. This is a very accessible fiord but requires some planning. Tourists can take boat tours lasting a couple of hours that regularly depart from Milford Sound Visitors' Centre. With only limited accommodation at Milford Sound, visitors stay either at Te Anau or Queenstown, where you can find many great hotels that you may choose from.
